SPORTS MEDICINE & arthroscopy: tennis elbow

NJ sports medicine specialist Robert A. Kayal, MD expertly treats elbow injuries of athletes and non-athletes alike, including those suffering from tennis elbow. Many sports place considerable strain on the joints of participating athletes: especially those requiring regular swinging and throwing. The elbow is especially vulnerable to this type of stress and injury, and tennis elbow is a painful condition suffered by athletes and others performing these repetitive motions. Regardless of the cause of your tennis elbow, the expert physicians at Kayal Orthopaedic Center will tailor a treatment plan that’s specific to you and the severity of your injury, bringing you to a full recovery as soon as possible.

What is Tennis Elbow?

Tennis elbow is a very common injury—not just to tennis players, as the name suggests, but to individuals who take part in activities involving repetitive wrist motions. Athletes participating in racquet sports are common sufferers of tennis elbow, as are painters, plumbers, construction workers, cooks and computer technicians. Specifically, the injury is a tear or partial tear to the area where forearm tendons and muscles attach to the outside of the elbow. Symptoms of tennis elbow include inflammation, gradually increasing pain on the outside of the upper arm, and worsening of pain while squeezing objects. It is rare for tennis elbow to appear on an x-ray, so diagnosis is done through a physical examination and thorough medical history.

Treatment for Tennis Elbow

Tennis elbow may be treated through rest, physical therapy, bracing and cortisone injections. However, in more severe cases, the physicians at Kayal Orthopaedic Center perform minimally invasive surgery to remove damaged tendons, muscle tissue and loose bodies in the elbow. Following elbow surgery, your NJ orthopedic surgeon will likely prescribe physical therapy to aid in regaining strength and achieving a full recovery.
