Ankle Fusion

Advanced Foot and Ankle Solutions

Ankle fusion, or ankle arthrodesis, is a surgical technique that alleviates severe ankle pain due to worn out or arthritic joints—a condition that’s called degenerative arthritis.

At Kayal Orthopaedic Center, our foot and ankle surgeons perform arthroscopic ankle arthrodesis, or ankle fusion, using two small incisions to reduce disturbance to the adjacent tissues and ankle tendons. This type of procedure is less traumatic to the patient’s body and speeds rehabilitation. Nevertheless, it is important to remember that if you decide to have an ankle fusion, you will likely be non-weight bearing for six to eight weeks. During this time, your foot surgeon will recommend a cast or orthopaedic boot—and you can utilize crutches or a wheelchair while the arthrodesis heals.

Treatment For

An ankle fusion is indicated for patients with painful, end-stage ankle arthritis, when more conservative treatments have failed. The arthritis can be the result of osteoarthritis, post-traumatic arthritis, arthritis from systemic cause, such as rheumatoid arthritis, or even avascular necrosis.

Benefits

When our joint specialists perform arthroscopic ankle fusion (arthrodesis), the procedure minimizes surgical scars, reduces post-operative pain and expedites healing. Despite post-surgical motion loss, ankle fusion helps patients achieve their main goal of pain relief. Consider the following benefits when deciding whether ankle fusion is the best option for you:● The repaired joint is stabilized● After healing, patients are able to bear their body weight without pain● Ankle fusion typically lasts a lifetime, and patients enjoy a return to activity without ongoing discomfort and instability
