Dr. Kayal Performs Hudson Regional Hospital’s First Robot-Assisted TKAs

Kayal Orthopaedic Center Expands Its Reach Into Hudson County

We our proud to announce that our own Robert A. Kayal, MD, FAAOS, recently completed Hudson Regional Hospital’s first Mako robotic-arm assisted total knee replacement surgeries or total knee arthroscopies.

This latest accomplishment is just another example of how the team at Kayal Orthopaedic Center is determined to expand our reach to offer the best orthopaedic treatments and therapies to residents throughout New Jersey and beyond. Our skilled and experienced team offers robotic-arm assisted surgery for total knee replacements, partial knee replacements, patellofemoral replacements and total hip replacements. We also specialize in innovative orthopaedic services from head to toe, including sports medicine in Paramus, NJ, and beyond.

Our new relationship with Hudson Regional Hospital allows us to perform Mako robotic-arm assisted joint replacements and other minimally invasive orthopaedic surgical procedures in state-of-the-art operating rooms.

Innovative Technology=Better Outcomes

“I’m so pleased about this new association with Hudson Regional Hospital,” Dr. Kayal said, pointing out that the Hudson County hospital has several robots and shares Kayal Orthopaedic Center’s passion for the field of robotic-arm assisted surgery. “Hudson Regional shares my philosophy to stay current and offer the latest and greatest technologies in the field of orthopaedic surgery.”

The Mako robotic arm can improve patient outcomes because of its precision and control. It helps reduce pain, smooth recoveries and maximize results. Dr. Kayal offered a fascinating look inside surgery with the Mako robotic arm.

“Some problems that patients present with are iatrogenic, which means they are caused by the surgeon,” Dr. Kayal explained. “These problems include: when an implant is oversized or overstuffed or when an implant is put in improperly or misaligned. Why Mako? Mako robotic surgery allows us to do a virtual replacement before the surgery so that we can properly position the hip or knee on a cross-sectional image such as an MRI or CT scan. It allows us to optimize position, size and alignment.”

Using this technology, Dr. Kayal can see an exact replica of the patient’s unique, bony anatomy in three dimensions. Before surgery, he can look at the bone and rotate it in all directions to make sure the implant will fit precisely.

He compared the process to designing and constructing a building, noting that a building must be designed on a computer before construction to ensure every detail is perfect.

Kayal Orthopaedic Center Stands Out

“Believe it or not in 2019,” Dr. Kayal said, “most orthopaedic surgeons around the country are still doing joint replacement surgery in a traditional manner without employing the use of robotic arm assistance. It’s not just about making the cuts. Using the software, we can also read the soft tissue to make sure the soft tissue balance and, therefore, the tension on the ligaments is the same throughout the entire arc of motion.”

It’s here where the robotic-assisted arm makes a remarkable difference.

“The robot does not allow us to deviate at all from the pre-operative design,” Dr. Kayal said. “In fact, if our hand moves—even a millimeter or two—away from the design, the robot will shut off, not allowing us to make the cuts. So, it results in less-invasive surgery, which equates to less bleeding, less stiffness, less swelling, less post-operative pain and a quicker recuperation. The technology is unbelievable.”
