Orthobiologics Help Regrow Healthy Tissue, Muscles
Techniques Help Body to Heal Itself
Another sleepless night? Maybe it was that shooting pain in your hip. Or a slow, dull ache in your knee. Or a constant throbbing in your shoulder. From shifting sleeping positions to medications to yoga and more, you probably feel like you’ve tried everything to ease the pain, get your rest and return to sports or other activities you enjoy.
Here’s something you might not have considered that could offer the relief you deserve. It’s called orthobiologics—an up-and-coming trend in orthopaedics and sports medicine in Paramus, NJ, throughout New Jersey and beyond. It’s a unique field of medicine in which materials, often from your own body, are used to not only heal damaged muscle and tissue but also regenerate them.
Orthobiologics use naturally occurring biomaterials such as human growth factors and proteins to relieve your pain, reduce swelling and get you moving the way you are meant to move. It’s a revolutionary way to treat sports injuries, osteoarthritis, severe joint pain and other orthopaedic conditions and injuries. Among the sports-related injuries it can heal are golfer’s elbow, tennis elbow and rotator cuff tears.
The team at Kayal Orthopaedic Center is at the forefront when it comes to orthobiologics. Dr. Robert A. Kayal and his elite surgical colleagues explore orthobiologics whenever these techniques are viable alternatives to more invasive surgical procedures and joint replacements.
Here are just some of the techniques available:
- Platelet-Rich Plasma: Your blood is spun in a centrifuge to separate the red and white blood cells from the platelet-rich plasma. Growth factors and proteins are then added to the plasma before it is injected into your bone, cartilage, joint, muscle, ligament or tendon to promote healing. These injections can speed up rehabilitation and prevent the need for surgery. They often reduce pain and increase mobility.
- BioCartilage: This is a cartilage replacement procedure that repairs degenerated and defective cartilage. Dehydrated BioCartilage particles, which are similar in composition to natural cartilage in the joints, are mixed with blood, platelet-rich plasma or saline to form a paste. This paste is then injected into the damaged area, where it becomes the framework for new cartilage tissue to attach and grow.
- Bone Marrow Aspiration: Bone marrow is extracted from your hip or pelvic bone and spun in a centrifuge to isolate regenerative stem cells. These nonembryonic stem cells are then injected into the damaged area, where they promote tissue regrowth and accelerate healing. Within two or three weeks, joints and muscles are more stable. This treatment is particularly effective treating arthritis, bone degeneration and tissue damage.
- Corticosteroid Injections: Cortisone is a natural steroid released by your adrenal gland to handle stress. The synthetic version is used to reduce inflammation and pain from sports injuries and musculoskeletal problems. These injections can resolve your pain permanently. They can also be used to ease the pain when you can’t tolerate physical therapy without help.
- Acellular Dermal Matrix Grafts: DermACELL and other ADMs are used to treat skin wounds and ulcerations. DermACELL is rich in collagen and growth hormones that promote healing. It provides the framework for new tissue growth. DermACELL is made from donated human tissue that is carefully sterilized to prevent the transmission of any disease.
